The story behind “two fat ladies 88″ is said to come from a club in North East London many tears ago. The man calling in this particular club was a lovely gentleman renowned for his use of cockney rhyming slang when calling out the numbers as they were generated. He had been trying hard to come up with a phrase for the number 88 yet he was having great difficulty doing so. One night, after pondering over his problem for a while, he went to his place of work with his mother and his aunt for a night of entertainment. His mother and aunt were two lovely ladies that happened to be slightly bigger than the average woman. After playing bingo for a while, they decided to go and get a drink together and accidentally blocked the mans view of the screen as they stood up. Now, he didn’t want to be rude to his family members although to himself he was thinking “will you two fat ladies sit down” as he was missing all of the numbers being called. Just as they moved out of the way of the screen, the number 88 appeared and it suddenly occurred to him that this number looked like his mother and aunt, two fat ladies! From that day on, he used that phrase whenever the number 88 came out and the phrase is still used today the world over!
We cannot be sure that this story is true although it is a humorous tale that entertains in a light hearted fashion.
